2020 brought with it the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, various aspects of society have changed, especially in terms of work.
Many jobs have changed from face-to-face to teleworking. According to a study carried out by the National School of Public Health (ENSP), 54% of Portuguese people in 2020 were satisfied with working remotely from home, and many of them have remained in this position.
If you’re one of the people who works from home, or you’re planning to find a job that does, here are some tips on time management and how to get the most out of remote work.

1. Setting limits and timetables
For those who work remotely, it’s very common not to be able to distinguish leisure time from work time. Most of the time, work takes up the rest space.
It may seem unimportant, but we end up not “switching off”, just as we would when leaving work for home.
The result is accumulated fatigue and, consequently, can give rise to the much talked about burnout – a self-inflicted mental disorder, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
On the other hand, just as teleworking can result in extra working hours, there is also a greater likelihood of procrastination.
Being at home can create the feeling that work tasks aren’t that important and you end up putting them off until the end of the day, or perhaps until the next day.
For these two reasons, it’s essential to set limits and separate your working hours from your leisure time.
Ideally, you should even set your own clock-in and clock-out times to ensure that you strike a balance.

2. Being contactable
Your cell phone is the link between your work and the work of your colleagues. During working hours, make sure you are always reachable.

3. Organization
Organizing your work is fundamental. Alongside the first tip, create your work routine at home, with check-in and check-out times and outline the tasks that need to be carried out and meet the objectives.
This makes work easier and ensures that you continue to have high levels of productivity.

4. Constant dialog with your teammates
It’s not because you’re at home working without any colleagues that you should handle all your projects alone. Keep in constant contact with your colleagues, share ideas and alert them to situations that could be improved.
Creating several working groups can also help with this organization.

5. Establish a fixed workplace
It’s essential to work in a comfortable space with an environment that stimulates your creativity and productivity.
Sometimes, at home, it’s hard to get away from household chores or even small hobbies and pastimes that can easily distract you. Establishing a room in the house to work in can help a lot in establishing the boundaries between work and leisure.
Follow these tips and you’ll see how your work will be just as productive, if not more so, as if you were in the office.
